Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today issued the following statement after the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts granted his motion for a preliminary injunction blocking a new rule by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) that would have imposed illegal and burdensome requirements on vote-by-mail systems ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The injunction comes after the court granted a temporary restraining order last week. 

“Once again, the court recognized that states do not have the time to completely overhaul their mail-in ballot procedures to comply with a Postal Service rule that is unconstitutional in the first place,” Raoul said. “The U.S. Constitution plainly gives states – not the federal executive branch – the power to administer elections. This rule would only create chaos and undermine confidence in our upcoming general election. I will continue to fight against this illegal attempt by the Trump administration to disenfranchise voters.” 

Raoul and a coalition of attorneys general filed a lawsuit challenging the rule last week. 

Recently, Attorney General Raoul launched an election resource hub on his office’s website to help educate voters on their rights. The hub will be updated as needed, and more information will be added as the general election nears.
